Marvel Misses

I read a couple of recent articles in which Marvel exec David Gabriel stated that issues of Marvel titles featuring women and ethnically diverse characters just weren’t selling well. He was quoted as saying, “people didn’t want any more diversity. They didn’t want female characters out there.” In effect, titles starring or featuring female characters front and center weren’t selling, and by extension, dragging down overall sales figures for the entire line. Well, it’s starting to emerge that this is pretty much a big pile of horseshit. Marvel has always had a…

Can I say “squeeeee” here? Because I really want to.

By the time you read this, the news has already broken, but just when my utter, complete, rapturous joy at the news that Supergirl is getting a second season on The CW has barely subsided, they announce that the Big Kahuna himself, Kal-El of Krypton will be appearing in the first two episodes of the new season! I Know My Value – a Postmortem

In the past couple of weeks, RT has been after me to write my promised follow-up to the Supergirl article, regarding the ABC series Agent Carter. Ever since I wrote my epic take on the inaugural season of Supergirl, the show had been on the bubble, teetering between renewal and cancellation. Speculation, expectation and hopes went both ways: Some people (me, for one, because I cannot live without seeing Melissa Benoist‘s radiant take on the heroine) wanted the show renewed; some people wanted the show cancelled. Not enough bang for the $3 million-dollar-per-episode average expenditure, they said. Who wants to watch a show about a girl, anyway, even if she can fly? they asked. This is kids’…

Supergirl – A New Hope

I’ve been wrestling with a way to review the 20 episodes of the new series, Supergirl. I could talk about how she represents the newest phase of feminism – which I know precisely dick (pun intended) about. I could talk about how not like a Zack Snyder superhero movie the show is – and it is not. I could talk about how a show like this offers hope that not all comic book properties adapted for movies or television take themselves a tad more seriously than absolutely necessary. So what…
