Marvel Misses

I read a couple of recent articles in which Marvel exec David Gabriel stated that issues of Marvel titles featuring women and ethnically diverse characters just weren’t selling well. He was quoted as saying, “people didn’t want any more diversity. They didn’t want female characters out there.” In effect, titles starring or featuring female characters front and center weren’t selling, and by extension, dragging down overall sales figures for the entire line. Well, it’s starting to emerge that this is pretty much a big pile of horseshit. Marvel has always had a…

Captains Courageous

The Chinese curse has come true, we do, in fact, live in interesting times. A while back I predicted that Misty Knight would soon be picking up Sam Wilson’s shield to become the new, and truly bad ass, Captain America.  Now I’m not just auguring it, I’m demanding it.  The time has come for a battalion of Captains to take to the streets (figuratively) and to the pages of Marvel Comics (literally).  Now, more than any time since the sixties, America needs heroes of every color; standard bearers to show…

2016 sucked. Apropos of nothing, here are my predictions for 2017. Misty Knight will be the new Captain America. By July, DC will be making noises about rebooting one of their major characters yet again. Bruce Banner will come back from the dead…again. Thanos will continue to be overused. Amadeus Cho will continue to be a tool. Moon Knight will continue to be brilliant…and then be cancelled. Doctor Strange will be cancelled by October. Kamala Khan will experience violent prejudice first hand.  My money says her brother gets attacked or…

Good News, Bad News

If you aren’t reading Steve Rogers: CAPTAIN AMERICA, you probably should be.  Like many of you, I was incensed at the whole “Cap is an agent of HYDRA switcheroo.  Initially, I thought, as did everyone else, that it was just a cheap publicity stunt. Well of course it was!  Happily, it is so much more. In the hands of Nick Spencer* (words) and Javier Pina (pictures), this title is not just a joy to read but a feast for the eyes.  Taut storytelling and crisp, vibrant visuals are the norm…

You Can’t Keep a Good Woman Down

After petitions, Twitter activism and much hand-wringing, it was announced that Peggy Carter, our favorite SSR Agent and founder of SHIELD, will be returning to television. But in a way no one would have expected. Disney and Marvel have released news of a single-episode appearance of Agent Carter in the animated series Marvel’s Avengers Assemble’s fourth season, entitled Avengers: Secret Wars. While there are not many details, it’s been revealed that she and Howard Stark (sadly, no Jarvis) will guest star in an episode described as “past and present collide” when…

Too Heavy A Mantle

Marvel has had a string of victories, lately, in the Diversity War.  Ms. Marvel, with its plucky heroine Kamala Khan, has been an unqualified success, both commercially and critically.  The Ultimates continue to plow deeper into the regions of Ditko Space with nary a white male among the crew.  Jane Foster is still doing a bang up job as The Mighty Thor. Ta-Nehisi Coates’s new Black Panther is showing real promise and Power Man and Iron Fist hit the ground running and hasn’t looked back.  But the title that had…

Captain America To Be Honored In Bronze.

This is a busy news day.  Brian Truitt of USA Today reports that Captain America will be getting his own statue in Brooklyn, in honor of his 75th anniversary.  The 13′ bronze sculpture is scheduled to be dedicated in Prospect Park on August 10th.  San Diego Comic-Con fans will get a sneak peek at the sculpture, July 20-24.  The sculpture will feature the quote, “I’m just a kid from Brooklyn”a featured in Captain America: The First Avenger.  It also appears that Chris Evans’ likeness from the film will be used. This…

Send In The Capes.

I haven’t written anything since Orlando.  Comic books just didn’t seem that important for the last week.  Brightly colored escapism seemed vapid in the face of all this hate and vitriol.  With the whole country pointing fingers and scapegoating, reading about heroes in tights seemed almost in bad taste.  But now, I’ve had a weekend to think and drink and reflect and I’ve come to the conclusion…fuck all that noise.  This is exactly when I need, some uplifting escapism.  You probably do to. I was in Chicago when the coward…

No, Steve Rogers is NOT an Agent of Hydra.

By now everyone has seen the odious images of Captain America hailing Hydra.  Right now, Joe Simon and Jack Kirby are spinning in their graves while Marvel makes money off of this cynical, shortsighted maneuver.  Plenty of people, myself included, have already raked Marvel over the coals for this soulless, witless, mercenary bit of harlotry.  ‘Nuff said.  That’s not why I’m here.  I actually have some good news.  You see, that douchebag in the red white and blue togs, hailing Hydra and desecrating our beloved hero, that’s not Captain America.…

Why So Serious? It’s Just The Holocaust.

Later this weekend, when I have calmed down and can be rational…when I am not running on pure, seething emotion…when I can be behave like an adult, I will write my official response to Marvel’s “creative” decision to turn Steve Rogers/Captain America into an agent of Hydra.  When I have regained my professional composure, I will not use phrases like “Fuckwitted, click-bait pushing pimps” nor will I throw around such disparaging slurs as “Soulless mercenary smut peddlers”. I will, instead, deal only in the facts as I see them.  In…
