Show Us Your Muscles

A lady friend of mine who is an even bigger geek than I (yes that is possible) has aired a major beef with Marvel Studios.  It’s not something that I had given much thought to but now that she has made me aware of it, I can’t get it out of my head.  Although their films are generally well cast they do have one glaring problem.  All of the so-called “superheroines” are lacking in the muscle department.  They are, in fact, kinda scrawny. Yeah, yeah, I know.  Scarlett Johansson is…

Bernie Wrightson Retires

For those of you who missed the announcement… JANUARY 30, 2017   Dear Fans and Friends, I apologize for our silence for the past few months. Last November Bernie began falling again, and having obvious problems with perception. He had to undergo yet another brain surgery to relieve bleeding, and then spend several weeks undergoing in-patient rehabilitation. Unfortunately, it appears that he has lasting damage: he has extremely limited function on his left side, and is unable to walk or reliably use his left hand, among other limitations. We have…

Captains Courageous

The Chinese curse has come true, we do, in fact, live in interesting times. A while back I predicted that Misty Knight would soon be picking up Sam Wilson’s shield to become the new, and truly bad ass, Captain America.  Now I’m not just auguring it, I’m demanding it.  The time has come for a battalion of Captains to take to the streets (figuratively) and to the pages of Marvel Comics (literally).  Now, more than any time since the sixties, America needs heroes of every color; standard bearers to show…

Too Dark Dark

Yay. Another R-rated movie from the DC Animated Universe. And this one is a sequel to Justice League: War. Before we get into this, I want to say something about Justice League: War. I actually have hope that Zack Snyder’s movie will be better than this piece of shit. I bought the DVD, watched half of it, then pulled the disc out of the player, placed it carefully inside its protective case, then threw it across the room. My living room wall still has a little divot where it impacted.…

The Coin

I just read today two troubling reports about a couple of well-known comic artists. Given the current zeitgeist, it worries me, and makes me wonder which side other comic book creators fall into. This is the elephant in the room, of course. It seems one can’t talk about anything without having to address, or at least acknowledge, recent events. But how they affect the different aspects of the American and human experiences has become a near-constant series of surprises to me and, perhaps, to all of us. This divide seems…

Guess What Rears Its Ugly Head…Yet Again

So, if you’re ever in Altoona and you just happen to be a racist…. Or you’re NOT really a racist, you just like racist jokes and everybody else is too thin skinned and needs to lighten up… Or you just like keeping your money with the locals…who happen to be maybe…I don’t no…racist? Then you just might like spending your filthy lucre at Excalibur Collectables. Please note, nowhere in this post did I actually say that anyone involved with (or owning) Excalibur Collectables was actually a racist so this post is in…

You Can’t Keep a Good Woman Down

After petitions, Twitter activism and much hand-wringing, it was announced that Peggy Carter, our favorite SSR Agent and founder of SHIELD, will be returning to television. But in a way no one would have expected. Disney and Marvel have released news of a single-episode appearance of Agent Carter in the animated series Marvel’s Avengers Assemble’s fourth season, entitled Avengers: Secret Wars. While there are not many details, it’s been revealed that she and Howard Stark (sadly, no Jarvis) will guest star in an episode described as “past and present collide” when…
