This Woman’s Work

I was prepared, after all the hype and good reviews my friends (including RT) had given the new Wonder Woman movie, to expect it to be on par – or close to it – with a Marvel movie. Or at least better than the dreck being churned out by DC and Warners so far. We don’t quite get there. It’s a better movie – by miles and miles – than the other examples of the DCEU thus far, and I’m convinced Diana, in the guise of Gal Gadot, is going to…

Snyder Steps Down After Personal Tragedy

The news broke today that producer, writer and director of the upcoming Justice League movie, Zack Snyder, along with his wife, producer Deborah Snyder, will be stepping down from completion of the film after a family tragedy. In the last couple of months, the Snyders have been working with director/writer of Marvel’s The Avengers, as well as the upcoming Batgirl movie, Joss Whedon to complete the Justice League film. Whedon will do pickups, inserts and other additional scenes to add to the footage already shot by Snyder. He had already…

Marvel Misses

I read a couple of recent articles in which Marvel exec David Gabriel stated that issues of Marvel titles featuring women and ethnically diverse characters just weren’t selling well. He was quoted as saying, “people didn’t want any more diversity. They didn’t want female characters out there.” In effect, titles starring or featuring female characters front and center weren’t selling, and by extension, dragging down overall sales figures for the entire line. Well, it’s starting to emerge that this is pretty much a big pile of horseshit. Marvel has always had a…

World Enough and Time

If I could turn back time If I could find a way — Cher   This is something that’s been bothering me for longer than a lot of you have even been alive. Superman did not reverse time to go back and save Lois in the first movie. What he did was travel backward in time to before everything happened and prevent it, knowing what disasters would happen because of, and despite, his prior actions. The whole “earth spinning backward”, “Hoover Dam un-disintegrating” bit was a visual shortcut to illustrate…

Too Dark Dark

Yay. Another R-rated movie from the DC Animated Universe. And this one is a sequel to Justice League: War. Before we get into this, I want to say something about Justice League: War. I actually have hope that Zack Snyder’s movie will be better than this piece of shit. I bought the DVD, watched half of it, then pulled the disc out of the player, placed it carefully inside its protective case, then threw it across the room. My living room wall still has a little divot where it impacted.…

The Coin

I just read today two troubling reports about a couple of well-known comic artists. Given the current zeitgeist, it worries me, and makes me wonder which side other comic book creators fall into. This is the elephant in the room, of course. It seems one can’t talk about anything without having to address, or at least acknowledge, recent events. But how they affect the different aspects of the American and human experiences has become a near-constant series of surprises to me and, perhaps, to all of us. This divide seems…

You Can’t Keep a Good Woman Down

After petitions, Twitter activism and much hand-wringing, it was announced that Peggy Carter, our favorite SSR Agent and founder of SHIELD, will be returning to television. But in a way no one would have expected. Disney and Marvel have released news of a single-episode appearance of Agent Carter in the animated series Marvel’s Avengers Assemble’s fourth season, entitled Avengers: Secret Wars. While there are not many details, it’s been revealed that she and Howard Stark (sadly, no Jarvis) will guest star in an episode described as “past and present collide” when…

This is the Harley Quinn story I’D like to see

I sometimes peruse an artist on DeviantArt whose name is Nebezial (link HERE). He does outstanding artistic renditions of DC and Marvel characters (among others), and I wonder whether he does it as true fan-art or if he’s developing a portfolio to approach one of these companies for work. I honestly hope he does, because he’d be an awesome addition to either company’s artistic bullpen. His art doesn’t change drastically between the intentionally funny to the dramatic. And he’s consistently good. Tonight, I was digging through his DA page and found…
